TWO THIRDS OF SCOTTISH HEALTH BOARDS IN BREACH OF WAITING TIME TARGET FOR BOWEL CANCER TESTS AS SERVICES REACH CRISIS POINT

  • National endoscopy crisis leads to an average 66% of Health Boards in breach of waiting time targets for tests that could diagnose bowel cancer.
  • More than 5,000 patients (5,178) in Scotland waited more than six weeks for tests at their local hospital as at 31 March this year.
  • Demand for these tests has increased dramatically over the last few years but this has not been matched with the vital investment, leading to an endoscopy crisis.
  • We are calling on Shona Robison MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health & Sport for the Scottish Government to ensure a priority of the new National Clinical Diagnostic Lead, announced yesterday, is to develop an action plan to tackle the growing endoscopy crisis in Scotland.
